Pseudogastromyzon cheni is a small, freshwater fish species belonging to the family Balitoridae. It is often referred to as a hillstream loach or Chinese sucker due to its suction-cup-like mouth and its adaptation to fast-flowing streams. Native to southern China, it thrives in clean, oxygen-rich water environments with strong currents, such as streams and rivers with rocky substrates.

Key Features:
Appearance: It has a flattened body adapted for clinging to rocks in fast-flowing water. Its coloration usually includes a mix of brown, black, and olive patterns, providing excellent camouflage against stream beds.
Size: Typically, it grows up to 5–7 cm (2–2.8 inches) in length.
Diet: It primarily feeds on algae, biofilm, and other microorganisms found on rocks and surfaces in its natural habitat.
Behavior: Known for being peaceful and compatible with other small, non-aggressive fish, making it a popular choice in home aquariums.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Setup:
Mimic natural habitat with a strong water flow and plenty of smooth rocks and driftwood.
Use a well-established filtration system to ensure high oxygen levels.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20–24°C (68–75°F)
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Diet in Captivity:
Algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach.
Social Behavior:
Best kept in small groups of 4–6 individuals to reduce stress.
Pseudogastromyzon cheni is especially popular in aquascaping setups, where its unique appearance and useful algae-eating habits are appreciated.
